Uttarkashi tunnel collapse: Rescue op delay due to fragile nature of terrain, check details
Uttarkashi tunnel collapse: In Uttarkashi, the mission to liberate 40 trapped workers from the collapsed Silkyara tunnel has reached its sixth day, witnessing a surge in efforts despite encountering formidable challenges.
However, rescue operation also witnessed delay due to the fragile nature of the location.
Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi, NHIDCL Director Anshu Manish Khalkho said, "Where you feel the fragile nature and vibration needs to be taken care of equilibrium also has to be maintained. So this needs to be done very precisely. We also have to take care of the morale of people trapped inside and as well as the rescue team outside."
When asked about what time trapped labourers will be able to sustain, Khalkho said, "Without food, a man can survive for six days. Here food and water are provided so from physical health to mental health of the workers is fine. We are communicating with them, and now doctors from the administration have reached out to counsel them."
During an earlier update, Khalkho said that rescuers have managed to drill through 24 metres into the rubble inside the Silkyara Tunnel, and are getting closer to 40 labourers who have been trapped inside, following the collapse of the under-construction tunnel for six days now.
Notably, the horrific incident unfolded November 11 following a landslide when a portion of the under-construction tunnel connecting Silkyara to Dandalgaon collapsed.
Continuous operations have been going on in the area to rescue the labourers. Supplies of food, water, and oxygen are being delivered through pipes, while rescuers maintain contact via walkie-talkies. A medical facility near the tunnel and standby hospitals ensure immediate care if needed.
There have been sporadic outside the Silkyara-Barkot tunnel in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi as workers remain concerned over the delay in rescuing 44 wowkers who have been trapped inside after a portion of the under-construction tunnel collapsed.
