Uttarakhand: Supportive wire on Rishikesh's Ram Jhula Bridge breaks, two-wheelers banned

Uttarakhand, August 17: The movement of two-wheeler vehicles was halted on the Ram Jhula Bridge in Uttarakhand's Rishikesh city on Thursday after the supportive wire broke due to a spate of River Ganga caused by heavy rainfall in recent days, officials said.

"The Pauri police administration has banned the movement of people and two-wheelers after the bridge of the famous Ram Jhula Bridge broke down in the pilgrimage city of Rishikesh due to the spate of river Ganga," officials stated.

Following heavy rain on Monday, Rishikesh saw a flood-like situation, with the river's water level rising above the danger limit.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami carried out an aerial survey of flood-affected districts in the state on Monday, as well as a review of the Ganga River's rising water level in Rishikesh.

Rishikesh experienced the most rainfall in the country in a 24-hour period on Monday morning, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD) data, with 42.00 cm falling during the period.

On Tuesday, the Lord Shiva statue near the Parmarth Niketan Ashram in the holy town became partially submerged in the river.

According to official estimates, 52 people died in the state this monsoon season as a result of rain-related accidents, while another 37 were injured.

SDRF and NDRF personnel were deployed in areas severely impacted by rain-related occurrences on the orders of Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami.

This monsoon's heavy rains in Uttarakhand have caused landslides and flash floods in various spots.
