US set to lift sanctions on Indian nuclear entities, 26 years after Pokhran test
PTC News Desk: The government of United States is all set to life sanctions on Indian nuclear entities in a bid to forge deeper energy ties with New Delhi and bolster a 20-year old landmark nuclear deal, said National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.
The ban on the Indian companies stemmed from the chill in the India-US relations following the May 1998 tests.
US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan today said the US was finalising steps to remove the Indian companies from the Entity List to allow cooperation in the civil-nuclear area. The US NSA Sullivan is on India visit
Sullivan said, “Today I can announce that the US is now finalising the necessary steps to remove long-standing regulations that have prevented civil-nuclear cooperation between India’s leading nuclear entities and US companies.”

"Although former President Bush and former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh laid out a vision of civil nuclear cooperation nearly 20 years ago, we have yet to fully realize it. But as we work to build clean energy technologies to enable growth in artificial intelligence, and to help US and Indian energy companies unlock their innovation potential, the Biden administration has determined that it is past time to take the next major step in cementing this partnership," he added further.
The United States had sanctioned more than 200 Indian entities after India tested nuclear weapons in 1998, with many of them taken off as the bilateral ties gradually evolved.
