US Judge blocks Trump's move to deport Indian academician over alleged Hamas ties
PTC News Desk: In a significant development, a US Judge has blocked Trump administration's move to deport Badar Khan Suri, an Indian man studying at Washington's Georgetown University. The order is to remain in effect until lifted by the Court.
The Department of Homeland Security has accused Badar Khan Suri of ties to the Palestinian militant group Hamas and said he had spread Hamas propaganda and antisemitism on social media. On March 15, Secretary of State Marco Rubio determined Suri could be deported for those activities, according to DHS.
An Indian national and postdoctoral fellow, Badar Khan Suri was arrested outside his residence in Virginia on Monday by federal agents after he was told being revoked. Suri, who is married to an American citizen, is awaiting a date in the immigration court, according to his lawyer.
"If an accomplished scholar who focusses on conflict resolution is whom the government decides is bad for foreign policy, then perhaps the problem is with the government, not the scholar," Suri's lawyer said.
