Finger authentication to facial recognition: UPSC to revamp its exam system with new technology to curb cheating

PTC News Desk: Following recent instances of cheating and fraud in government examinations, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has decided to update its exam system using advanced digital technologies. The commission plans to include cutting-edge Aadhaar-based fingerprint authentication and facial recognition for candidates.

Technological solutions such as closed circuit television (CCTV) monitoring using artificial intelligence (AI) and QR code scanning of e-admit cards are also being considered to avoid fraud and impersonation during examinations.

Every year, the UPSC conducts 14 examinations, including the Civil Services Examination (CSE), as well as a variety of recruitment tests and interviews for senior government positions.

The UPSC has issued a tender requesting proposals from public sector undertakings (PSUs) to supply technical services during its examinations.

"The bidder should be a profit-making entity having an average annual turnover of at least Rs 100 crore from examination-based projects during the last three financial years," the tender specified.

The tender documents stated that the exam schedule, list of exam sites, and number of candidates will be sent to the service provider two to three weeks before the examination.

The Supreme Court recently criticised the National Testing Agency (NTA) after many flaws were discovered in the administration of the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) 2024.

The development coincides with the issue surrounding trainee IAS officer Puja Khedkar, who allegedly faked documents to appear for the civil service test 12 times, exceeding the number of allowed attempts. The UPSC has filed a criminal case against Khedkar, and Delhi Police has also registered one.
