UPPCS to hold a key recruitment exam in single shift after student's protest

PTC News Desk: In response to aspirants' demands, the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) agreed on Thursday to hold a key recruitment exam in a single shift.

The commission will form a team to investigate how the other exam may be administered in a single shift, according to a statement issued by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's office.

“The CM took cognizance of the demand of students in Prayagraj and asked the Commission to take necessary decisions by communicating and coordinating with students regarding the PCS Preliminary Examination 2024 in one day. A committee has been formed for RO/ARO (Pre.) Examination-2023. It will consider all aspects and submit a detailed report soon,” the statement read.

However, claiming that there were attempts to "break up" the protest, the candidates refused to call it off. The agitation would continue until the Uttar Pradesh government decided to hold the RO/ARO exam in a single shift, they said.

Previously, a November 5 notification by UPPSC to hold the Provincial Civil Service (PCS) prelims in two shifts on December 7/8, and the Review Officers/Assistant Review Officer (RO/ARO) exam in three shifts on December 22/23, prompted thousands of students to protest in Prayagraj, where the commission is headquartered.

On Monday, they gathered outside UPPSC's city headquarters to launch their "one day, one shift" campaign. They argued that exams conducted across several shifts would raise the likelihood of paper leaking. They further stated that by administering the same exam on several dates, the difficulty level of the question papers could change.

On the other hand, UPPSC argued that giving the examinations in various shifts would preserve the exam's "sanctity." It further said that the data would be evaluated using a "normalisation" technique because the tests were spread out over numerous days or shifts.
