UP: Two feared dead as fire breaks out in Ghaziabad building, eight rescued

UP, June 12: Two women are feared dead in a fire that broke out at a multi-storey building here in Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad on Monday morning.

Chief Fire Officer (CFO) Rahul Pal said the incident was reported at 6.52 a.m. from Lal Bagh colony in Ghaziabad district's Loni area, adding that the building houses a tent and catering service.

"They (the women) were taken to a hospital and have possibly died," he said. There were eight others in the building and they have been rescued, he added.

Teams were dispatched quickly to the scene, and two fire tenders—one from Sahibabad and one from Tronica City—were sent, according to Pal. "There was a major fire in the building's ground floor where works related to the tent house business were done," he added.

"There were eight persons trapped in the upper part of the building. They were rescued by breaking a wall after firefighters reached them using an external stair. When the building was further checked, a woman was found injured on the first floor and another on the second floor. They were taken to a hospital and have possibly died," the officer further said.

According to Pal, the ground floor of the building experienced a short circuit, which may have been the cause of the fire. He continued that nobody was on the ground floor when the incident occurred.

According to Pal, an iron gate fell during the rescue effort, injuring a firefighter.
