PTC Web Desk: The question paper for June 18's UGC-NET exam was leaked 48 hours earlier and sold on the dark web and encrypted social media platforms for Rs 6 lakh, according to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sources.

The Education Ministry, which was already under fire for the NEET-UG test, cancelled the NET exam after receiving input from a federal anti-cybercrime unit.

According to sources, the source of the leak is currently unknown. The agency will collaborate with the National Testing Agency, or NTA, the central body in charge of conducting competitive exams.

The role of coaching centres in several states, where thousands of aspirants enrol at great cost in the hope of cracking exams like NET, NEET (for medical courses), and IAS (for civil service) tests, is also being investigated, according to sources, who added that CBI officers could visit a few in person.

On Thursday, the CBI filed its first FIR, or first information report, in this case, accusing individuals who have yet to be identified based on the ministry's complaint. The ministry stated that the information indicates "prima facie that the integrity of the examination may have been compromised".

Also, hours after the UGC-NET cancellation, sources said authorities suspected a large-scale corruption racket was behind the leaked documents. Given these concerns, sources said officials in charge of administering the exam, including those who set question papers, would be investigated.
