Two lawyers contest to represent Saif Ali Khan's attacker; judge intervenes

PTC Web Desk: A courtroom in Mumbai turned into a scene of confusion on Sunday when two lawyers contested to represent Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, the man accused of attacking actor Saif Ali Khan at his Bandra residence.

The accused, suspected to be a Bangladeshi national, was apprehended by the Mumbai Police from Thane on January 16. Shehzad allegedly broke into Saif Ali Khan's apartment in the "Satguru Sharan" building around 2.30 am with the intention of theft and stabbed the actor during the incident. Following the attack, Saif was rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where he underwent two surgeries. Doctors have reported that he is recovering well and may be discharged soon.

During the hearing, Shehzad was asked if he had any complaints against the police, to which he responded negatively. The courtroom drama unfolded when a lawyer stepped forward to represent Shehzad but was interrupted by another lawyer who quickly secured Shehzad's signature on a vakalatnama (legal representation document). This created confusion about who would officially represent the accused.

The magistrate intervened to resolve the matter and suggested that both lawyers act as a team in Shehzad's defense. The lawyers agreed to the proposal. The court then remanded Shehzad to five days of police custody, stating that the possibility of an international conspiracy behind the incident could not be ruled out at this stage.
