TV journalist Bhawana Kishore arrest: Press Council of India serves notices on Punjab; seeks report within 2 weeks

New Delhi, May 10: The Press Council of India has served a notices on the Punjab Government and sought a report on the arrest of Times Now journalist Bhawana Kishore and "preventing" her from doing her journalistic duty.

Bhawana Kishore and two others were arrested by the Punjab Police on May 5 when their vehicle allegedly hit a woman, injuring her hand. The TV journalist was released from Ludhiana on May 7 after she was granted interim bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.


 Press Council of India chairperson Ranjana Prakash Desai has served notices on the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, Punjab DGP and other senior officials seeking the report within two weeks.


The Press Council of India chairperson has taken suo-motu cognisance of the matter as per the relevant provisions of the law, it said.

Which charges are slapped on TV journalist?

Bhawana Kishore, along with video journalist Mrityunjay Kumar and car driver Parminder Singh, faced charges under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act for allegedly making casteist remarks against the woman. 

Bail granted 

The Punjab and Haryana High Court on May 9 granted bail to Bhawana Kishore, Mrityunjay Kumar and Parminder Singh. Justice Augustine George Masis questioned their arrest and the subsequent remand order by the magistrate.
