Train tragedy averted: 12-year-old waves red shirt to flag track damage, rewarded
PTC News Desk: A big tragedy was averted as a 12-year-old boy waved his red shirt to signal the train track damage.
According to officials, Mursalin Seikh prevented a train accident in the Malda district of West Bengal, waving his red shirt to an approaching passenger train after spotting a damaged track.
The loco-pilot noticed Mursalin Seikh's signal and immediately applied the emergency brake, stopping the train just in time.
The incident occurred last Thursday near the Bhaluka road yard.
"A 12-year-old boy in Malda has defined bravery after he waved his red shirt to make the loco-pilot of a speeding passenger train stop the train from crossing a rain-damaged portion," Northeast Frontier Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Sabyasachi De said.
He stated that the portion had been damaged in a location where rain swept away soil and pebbles.
"Mursalin Seikh, the son of a migrant labourer from a nearby village, was also present in the yard with the railway staff." When the child spotted a rain-damaged portion under the tracks, he responded wisely at the time and notified the loco pilot of an upcoming passenger train by waving his red shirt along with other on-duty railway staff," he added.
The damaged portion of the track was repaired, and operations resumed later.
"NF Railway authorities today rewarded the brave boy with a certificate and cash award for his valour. Malda North MP Khagen Murmu along with Divisional Railway Manager of Katihar Shri Surendra Kumar reached the boy's home and rewarded him and appreciated his effort. NFR salutes the boy's approach towards society being a teenager."
