Tashi Namgyal, Ladakhi shepherd who warned Indian Army about Kargil intrusion, is no more
PTC Web Desk: Tashi Namgyal, the Ladakhi shepherd credited with alerting the Indian Army about the 1999 Pakistani infiltration into Kargil, has passed away. He was the first to provide crucial information regarding the intrusion by Pakistan Army troops in the Batalik sector.
The 14 Corps of the Indian Army, based in Leh, shared the news of Namgyal's sudden demise on ‘X’ on Friday. The Army expressed its deep condolences, stating, “His invaluable contribution during Operation Vijay 1999 will remain etched in golden letters. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family.”
In May 1999, during the Kargil conflict, Tashi Namgyal was searching for his missing yak when he spotted Pakistani soldiers in Pathan attire digging bunkers atop the Batalik mountain range. Realising the significance of the situation, he immediately informed the Indian Army, a timely warning that played a crucial role in India's military response.
Namgyal’s actions during Operation Vijay remain a vital part of India’s history in the Kargil War.
