Tamil Nadu train accident: 18 trains cancelled after 12 coaches of train derail; 19 injured
Tamil Nadu train accident: A passenger train going at 75 kmph collided with a stationary goods train in Tamil Nadu on Friday at around 8:30 p.m. The train entered a loop route instead of the main line, and at least 12 coaches derailed, injuring several passengers, according to railway officials.
A powerful car also caught fire. Train 12578 Mysuru - Darbhanga Bagmati Express collided with a goods train at Kavaraippettai railway station in the Tiruvallur district, near Chennai.
Dr T Prabhushankar, Tiruvallur District Collector, reported that 1,360 persons were on board. 19 passengers were reported to be injured, with four suffering serious injuries. They were immediately sent to a local hospital, he stated. No casualties have been reported thus far.
Passengers who were stranded after midnight were taken to Dr MGR Chennai Central train station via MTC buses. Early in the morning, a special train left from Dr MGR Chennai Central to take the stranded passengers to their destination.
Speaking about the accident, R N Singh, General Manager of Southern Railway, stated, "The train was heading towards Gudur and then to Andhra Pradesh. A goods train heading for Gudur was stationed on the loop line and given priority. The train was scheduled to pass through the main line, but despite the signal, it entered the loop line. It hit the goods train from behind, and the engine derailed."
According to officials, the train crew experienced a severe jerk before entering the loop line.
18 trains cancelled
Following this, multiple trains were either immediately rerouted, rescheduled, or cancelled. 18 of the scheduled trains are cancelled for Saturday.
The railway has requested a high-level probe into the accident.
