At least 34 people died and over 100 were hospitalised on Wednesday after allegedly drinking illicit liquor in Tamil Nadu's Kallakurichi district. According to officials, the death toll is likely to rise.

Tamil Nadu Hooch tragedy: Death toll rises to 34; 100 hospitalised after consuming illicit liquor in Kallakurichi

Tamil Nadu Hooch tragedy: The death toll in Tamil Nadu Hooch tragedy has risen to 34 with at least 100 people hospitalised.

Earlier it was reported that at least 29 people died and over 60 were hospitalised on Wednesday after allegedly drinking illicit liquor in Tamil Nadu's Kallakurichi district. According to officials, the death toll is likely to rise.


Chief Minister MK Stalin said he was "shocked" by the deaths and that action had been taken against those officials responsible for failing to prevent the incident.

MK Stalin wrote on X, “I was shocked and saddened to hear the news of the deaths of people who had consumed adulterated liquor in Kallakurichi. Those involved in the crime have been arrested in this matter. Action has also been taken against the officials who failed to prevent it. Immediate action will be taken if the public informs about those involved in such crimes. Such crimes that ruin the society will be suppressed with an iron fist.”

K Kannukutti, 49, was arrested after the government seized approximately 200 litres of illegal liquor, including deadly methanol, according to a statement.

MK Stalin ordered a Crime Branch-Crime Investigation Department (CB-CID) investigation to conduct a thorough investigation. According to a statement, the government has replaced Sravan Kumar Jatavath, Kallakurichi district collector, and suspended superintendent of police Samay Singh Meena. Nine additional police officers, including those from the Kallakurichi prohibition wing, have also been suspended, according to the report.

MS Prasanth, the Kallakurichi district's new collector, paid visits to patients at the Government Medical College Hospital. Rajath Chaturvedi is the district's new police superintendent. MK Stalin sent senior ministers EV Velu and Ma Subramanian to Kallakurichi to assist the affected families.
