PTC News Desk: Tabla maestro Zakir Hussain dies at 73 after prolonged illness. His family has confirmed the development.
He died due to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosiswas for which he was undergoing treatment at a hospital in San Francisco in the US due to the heart related complications.
Hussain had been hospitalised for two weeks, however later he was shifted to the ICU when his condition worsened. Initially several reports of his death surfaced online which were dismissed by his family asserting that he is very critical but breathing.
On Monday morning , the family officially confirmed his death.
"The legendary Tabla maestro leaves behind a legacy that is cherished and respected by countless music lovers across the world, with an infuence that will reflect on generations to come," his family said.
Earlier on Sunday reports of his hospitalisation came to light and the family had sought love and prayers for his early recovery.
In the official statement on Hussain's passing on Monday, his family said, "His prolific work as a teacher, mentor and educator has left an indelible mark on countless musicians. He hoped to inspire the next generation to go further. He leaves behind an unparalleled legacy as a cultural ambassador and one of the greatest musicians of all time."
