Supreme Court stays proceedings against Rahul Gandhi in defamation case
PTC News Desk: The Supreme Court on Monday has stayed the trial court's proceedings in defamation case against leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi over his remarks on Amit Shah and the BJP.
A Bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta was hearing a petition filed by Rahul Gandhi challenging the Jharkhand High Court's order, which had dismissed his plea to quash the defamation case filed against him by BJP worker Navin Jha in 2018.
Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi representing Rahul Gandhi informed the court that the complaint can only be filed by aggrieved person and that complaint cannot be filed by a proxy party.
The court has granted four weeks time to the complainant Navin Jha, and the Jharkhand government to file response to Singhvi. In February last year, the Jharkhand High Court had rejected Rahul Gandhi's pleas to quash the defamation case filed against him.
