Delhi air pollution: Supreme Court raps Delhi government, police over absence of checkpoints at borders

The Supreme Court on Monday came down heavily on Delhi Police over absence of check points at borders of the city. 


A bench headed by Justice AS Oka said that they mull prosecuting Delhi Police Commissioner under the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) Act for deploying police personnel at only 23 check points, instead of all, on November 18 when Stage 4 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) came into effect.

The remarks came after the 13 members of the bar who were appointed as commissioners to review the implementation of GRAP IV measures submitted their report on Monday. 

The apex court also rapped Delhi government and said that there were no were no checkposts at borders of the city and the ban on heavy vehicles from entering into the national capital was also not in place effectively. The bench said that they were informed that no Police or government personnel were present at the border checkpoints of the border and they were only manned by toll collection staff of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
