Supreme Court to hear petitions challenging Waqf Amendment Act today
PTC News Desk: The Supreme Court is set to hear a batch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Waqf (Amendment) Act. Since the passing of the legislature, the act has triggered nationwide protest and objections across the country.
The critics of the act have argued that the law violates fundamental rights, the government asserts that amendment is essential for ensuring transparency in the management of Waqf properties.
A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, Justice Sanjay Kumar, and Justice KV Viswanathan will begin hearing the petitions at 2 pm on Wednesday.
The petitions also comprise two submitted by Hindu groups challenging the original Waqf Act of 1995, while others dispute the legality of the recent amendments. Some petitioners have additionally requested a temporary suspension of the Act until the court reaches a verdict.
The applicants represent a range of political parties, including Congress, Trinamool Congress, CPI, YSRCP led by Jagan Mohan Reddy, Samajwadi Party, actor Vijay’s TVK, RJD, JDU, Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM, AAP, and the Indian Union Muslim League, among others.
