Shallow fog blankets Delhi; flights and trains affected amid poor visibility
New Delhi, February 2: Delhi found itself under the grasp of shallow fog on a chilly Friday, causing widespread visibility issues and disruptions to both flight and train services. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that certain areas of Delhi and East Uttar Pradesh were blanketed in a layer of fog, while denser fog affected isolated regions in Haryana, Rajasthan, and Jharkhand.
By 11:30 pm on Thursday, the visibility plummeted to 500 metre in Delhi's Safdarjung and East Uttar Pradesh. Several areas in Haryana, Rajasthan, and Jharkhand experienced severely reduced visibility, dropping to as low as 50 metre. In response to the biting cold, people at the New Delhi Railway Station sought refuge near fires to shield themselves from the harsh climate.
On February 1, Delhi encountered a minimum temperature of 12.3 degrees Celsius, with the maximum temperature reaching 18.6 degrees Celsius. The IMD anticipated ongoing light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms in various areas of Delhi-NCR. This prediction came after unexpected rainfall in the city on the preceding day.

The IMD's alert specified that thunderstorms with moderate-intensity rain were occurring in many places in Delhi and its adjacent areas, including Narela, Bawana, Alipur, Burari, Rohini, Karawal Nagar, Loni Dehat, Hindon AF Station, Bahadurgarh, Ghaziabad, Indirapuram, Chhapraula, Noida, Gurugram, and Manesar.
The weather conditions prompted people to take precautions against the elements, and the situation underscored the challenges faced by transportation services. The shallow fog not only disrupted daily life but also added an additional layer of complexity to the ongoing winter conditions in the national capital.
As the IMD continued to monitor and report on the evolving weather patterns, residents and travellers alike braced themselves for the persistence of foggy conditions and the potential impact on various aspects of daily life in Delhi and its surrounding regions.
