Setback to Ram Rahim as HC defers decision on dera chief's furlough plea

PTC Web Desk:  The Punjab and Haryana High Court has deferred its decision on the 21-day furlough application submitted by Dera chief Gurmeet Singh Ram Rahim, rescheduling the hearing to August 8 without issuing any immediate orders.

In his petition, the dera chief stated that he had earlier submitted a request for a 21-day furlough to the Haryana Government and now seek the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s authorisation, asserting that furlough or parole cannot be granted without the court's approval.

The High Court had earlier issued notices to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and the Haryana government, requiring their responses to the petition.

This development follows a prior petition filed by the SGPC in the High Court, challenging the frequent grants of parole and furlough to the dera chief. On February 29, the High Court directed the Haryana Government not to grant parole or furlough to the dera chief without the court's consent. Consequently, the dera chief is now petitioning the High Court for the furlough, asserting his right to the same. The HC will reconvene to hear this matter on August 8.
