Season's first snow in upper Shimla; 300 tourists rescued at Atal Tunnel, Manali

PTC News Desk: Himachal Pradesh witnessed its first widespread snowfall of the season, enveloping several areas in upper Shimla, Lahaul and Spiti, Chamba, and Kullu. The picturesque landscape turned into a winter wonderland, marking the onset of winter magic in the region.

In the wake of heavy snowfall, a rescue operation unfolded as approximately 300 tourists found themselves stranded near the South Portal (SP) of the Atal Tunnel in Rohtang. Among the trapped were around 50 vehicles and a Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) bus.


Kullu Superintendent of Police (SP) Sakshi Verma reported, "All tourists have been evacuated from ATR, and the rescue operation was conducted in collaboration with Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Manali, Tehsildar Manali, Station House Officer (SHO) Manali, and our dedicated rescue team."

The rescue efforts were prompted by the unexpected snowfall that led to challenging conditions for travelers. The rescue team successfully navigated through adverse weather to ensure the safety of the stranded tourists.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued an orange alert for various regions in Himachal Pradesh for the following two days. According to the IMD forecast, heavy rain or snowfall is anticipated in Chamba, Kangra, Kinnaur, Kullu, Lahaul, Spiti, Mandi, and Shimla districts from the late night of January 30 to the morning of February 2.

As the winter weather continues to embrace the state, residents and visitors alike are urged to exercise caution and stay updated on weather advisories for their safety. The picturesque snow-covered landscapes, however, offer a breathtaking view, captivating the essence of winter in Himachal Pradesh.
