Same-sex marriage case: SC refers pleas to 5-Judge constitution bench, lists the matter on April 18
New Delhi, March 13: Supreme Court on Monday referred petitions regarding the legal recognition of same-sex marriage to a constitutional bench. A five-judge Supreme Court constitution bench will hear the case beginning April 18.
The Indian government opposes same-sex marriage recognition, it said in a filing to the Supreme Court on Sunday, urging the court to reject LGBT couples' challenges to the current legal framework.

According to the filing seen by Reuters, the Ministry of Law believes that, while there are various types of relationships in society, the legal recognition of marriage is for heterosexual relationships, and the state has a legitimate interest in maintaining this.
"Living together as partners and having sexual relationship by same-sex individuals ... is not comparable with the Indian family unit concept of a husband, a wife and children," Centre had argued in an affidavit filed with SC.
