PTC News Desk: S. Jaishankar, India's External Affairs Minister, made a significant statement during an interactive session at a security conference in Munich, alongside US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock. Responding to questions about India's foreign policy approach, particularly regarding its procurement of crude oil from Russia amidst Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, Jaishankar defended India's stance of maintaining multiple options. He emphasised that nations face different pulls and pressures and that having multiple options should be admired rather than criticised.

Jaishankar elaborated on the complexities of international relationships, highlighting that countries have diverse histories and challenges, making it difficult to have a one-dimensional relationship. He emphasised that while India values partnerships and shared beliefs, it is also mindful of its own interests and strategic positioning.

Addressing concerns about terrorism, Jaishankar unequivocally condemned the attacks on Israeli cities by Hamas as terrorism. He stressed the importance of observing humanitarian law while also reaffirming India's support for a two-state solution regarding the Palestine issue.

Regarding the BRICS grouping, Jaishankar noted its significance in providing an alternative platform in an era dominated by Western powers. He highlighted the growing interest in BRICS, with around 30 countries expressing interest in joining, indicating the perceived value of the alliance.

In conclusion, Jaishankar emphasised the distinction between being non-Western and anti-Western, characterising India as a country with strong relations with Western nations while maintaining its independence and strategic autonomy.
