Rs 2,000 notes worth Rs 7,581 crore still in circulation
PTC Web Desk: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) stated that 97.87 per cent of the Rs 2000 denomination banknotes have returned to the banking system, However, Rs 7,581 crore worth of the withdrawn notes are still with the public.
On May 19, 2023, the RBI announced the withdrawal of ₹ 2000 denomination banknotes from circulation.
Since May 19, 2023, the total value of Rs 2000 banknotes in circulation has decreased from Rs 3.56 lakh crore to Rs 7,581 crore as of June 28, 2024.
"97.87% of the Rs 2000 banknotes in circulation as of May 19, 2023, has since been returned," RBI said.
Until October 7, 2023, Rs 2000 banknotes could be deposited or exchanged at all bank branches nationwide.

Since May 19, 2023, banknotes worth Rs 2000 can be exchanged at the Reserve Bank's 19 issuing offices.
Beginning October 9, 2023, RBI issue offices will accept Rs 2000 banknotes from individuals and entities for deposit into bank accounts.
Members of the public can credit their bank accounts with Rs 2000 banknotes by sending them through India Post from any post office in the country to any RBI issue office.
The 19 RBI offices for depositing and exchanging banknotes are located in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna, and Thiruvananthapuram.
