Report on Waqf (Amendment) Bill tabled in Rajya Sabha accepted amid opposition uproar
PTC News Desk: The Joint Parliamentary Committee tabled report on Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 in Rajya Sabha and was subsequently accepted amid massive uproar by opposition. Following the ruckus in Rajya Sabha, chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar briefly adjourn the proceedings on Thursday.
As soon as the report was tabled in Rajya Sabha, opposition MPs expressed their objection and asserted that their dissent note were removed, hence resorted to sloganeering. The uproar continued as Dhankhar tried to read out a message from the President. "Don't show disrespect to the President of India," Dhankhar said while urging Leader of Opposition and Congress MP Mallikarjun Kharge to pacify the opposition members.
While Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge pointed out that the opposition would not accept "fake reports" that "bulldoze our views". He further laid stress that the report shall be sent back to the committee and presented again.
"In the JPC report, many members have their dissent report. It is not right to remove those notes and bulldoze our views. This is anti-democracy... We will never accept such fake reports. If the report does not have dissenting views, it should be sent back and presented again," Kharge said.
Following rigorous scrutiny, the final report of the Joint Parliamentry Committee was presented to Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla on January 30. The amended revised bill was adopted by the panel on January 29.
The committee accepted the ammendments proposed by ruling NDA government while the dessent notes were removed that were presented by the opposition.
