Record rush in Himachal Pradesh | Shimla, Manali among key tourist spots jam-packed; huge traffic jams add to woes

PTC Web Desk: Himachal Pradesh, renowned for its serene landscapes and cool weather, is experiencing unprecedented rush this season. People from  the plains are heading to the hills to beat the severe heatwave, following which the hill state has seen unprecedented influx of tourists. With temperatures in many parts of India soaring to "feels like" 50 degrees Celsius, people are flocking to the hills in search of relief.

The surge in tourists has led to severe traffic jams across major tourist destinations such as Manali, Shimla, and Dharamsala. Roads that usually offer a scenic drive are now clogged with vehicles, causing significant delays and frustration among travellers. The local authorities are struggling to manage the unprecedented number of visitors, which has strained infrastructure and resources.

Alongside traffic woes, the influx has driven up the cost of goods and services. Reports indicate that prices for essentials, food, and accommodation have skyrocketed. Hotels and guesthouses, capitalising on the high demand, have significantly increased their rates. Even basic amenities are being sold at inflated prices, leading to complaints from tourists about being overcharged.

Despite the clear indicators of strain on local resources and the tourist experience, stakeholders in Himachal Pradesh's tourism industry have yet to devise a comprehensive plan to manage the situation. The lack of proactive measures has resulted in negative experiences for many visitors.

Popular spots such as Manali, Shimla, and Dharamsala are jam-packed. These destinations are famed for their scenic beauty and cultural attractions, but the overwhelming number of visitors has led to overcrowded streets and long queues at tourist sites.
