Punjab and Haryana hit by hailstorm; farmers fear extensive damage to crops | Watch

PTC Web Desk: In an unexpected turn of events, hailstorms, strong winds and rain lashed several parts of Haryana and Punjab on Saturday, with farmers fearing extensive damage to standing crops, particularly in districts of Bathinda.

The sudden and severe weather changes have led to the decimation of vital crops, with the repercussions posing a threat to the livelihoods of many farmers. The districts of Jalandhar and Kapurthala, which were already grappling with adverse climatic conditions, are now facing the aftermath of this halstorms. 

The unrelenting downpour and hailstorms have inflicted substantial losses on crops such as wheat, maize, and sugarcane. Agricultural Department officials said unexpected weather patterns had significantly impacted the quality and yield of crops, leaving farmers in a precarious situation.

The affected regions in Bathinda have witnessed a heavy loss in the cotton crop, adding to the woes of the farming community. The authorities are closely monitoring the situation, acknowledging the potential economic hardships that farmers may endure as a result of this natural calamity.

The severity of the damage has prompted concerns about the availability and affordability of staple food items like potatoes and onions. With the unexpected weather disrupting the cultivation of these crops, there is a looming threat of scarcity in the market, potentially leading to a rise in prices.

Regrettably, this comes at a time when farmers are already grappling with various challenges, and hopes of compensation from the government seem dim. The farmers express disappointment, citing the lack of any relief measures or support from the government in the face of recurrent adversities.
