PTC News Desk: A 32 year old pregnant woman in Maharashtra has been diagnosed with 'foetus in fetu', an extremely rare condition in which a malformed foetus was discovered inside stomach of the fetus.

The extremely rare condition came to light when the woman in her ninth month of pregnancy underwent a sonography two days ago, officials said.  The anomaly remained undetected in earlier scans owing to its extreme rarity and unpredictability.

“This was missed in the previous sonography because this is a very rare condition in which no one can even imagine that such a condition can exist. So, I did a detailed study from a couple of doctors and confirmed it,” Obstetrician and gynaecologist at the hospital, Dr Prasad Agarwal said.

The doctors have also asserted that woman is likely to have a normal delivery, however the baby will be required immediate medical supervision after the birth.

The exact cause of this condition is not fully understood, but it is believed to result from an anomaly during the development of identical twins. It is considered a developmental anomaly rather than a true twin pregnancy, as the parasitic twin cannot survive independently.
