Police officer injured, tear gas deployed as police and farmers clash in Haryana

PTC News Desk: In a tumultuous scene in Khedi Chwpata, Hisar, Haryana, on Friday, a police officer was injured during clashes between protesting farmers and law enforcement. Videos captured the chaotic standoff, with riot police in full gear attempting to maintain order as they detained individuals while surrounded by farmers.

The eruption of violence, involving the firing of tear gas shells and a police baton charge, occurred when farmers were prevented from advancing towards Khanauri on the Punjab border. They intended to join thousands gathered there and at the Shambhu border crossing for a 'Delhi Chalo' march, demanding legal assurances for Minimum Support Price (MSP), farm loan waivers, pensions, and the rollback of increased electricity rates, among other grievances.

Earlier in the day, a 62-year-old farmer from Bathinda district, Darshan Singh, passed away due to a cardiac arrest in Khanauri. His death follows that of Subhkaran Singh, 21, during clashes with police at the same location. Darshan Singh's death has further fueled tensions, with farmer leaders demanding legal action be taken against those responsible before his cremation.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed condolences and announced compensation and employment for Darshan Singh's family. The deaths of these farmers underscore the intensity of ongoing protests, which began in 2020 and 2021 with nationwide demonstrations against agricultural reforms.

Despite these setbacks, farmer leaders remain resolute, deferring plans for the Delhi march but standing firm on their demands. Talks between the government and farmer representatives have taken place, with expectations for further negotiations. Meanwhile, the political arm of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha observed a "black Friday," condemning government officials through symbolic effigy burnings.

The farmers' federation has announced plans for a tractor rally and a gathering at Delhi's Ram Leela Ground. Their demands include extending MSP coverage to all crops and implementing the Swaminathan Commission's payment formula. Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda has urged patience and peaceful protests, cautioning against external interference as the ruling party prepares for imminent elections.
