PM Modi pays tribute to Jan Nayak Karpoori Thakur's enduring legacy
PTC News Desk: On the occasion of Jan Nayak Karpoori Thakur Ji's 100th birth anniversary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi pays tribute to the late socialist leader, recognising his enduring legacy as a true "Jan Nayak" and his profound impact on social justice.
PM Modi, expressing his gratitude as an individual from the backward classes, acknowledges the invaluable contributions of Karpoori Thakur Ji, whose relentless pursuit of social justice left an indelible mark on the lives of millions. Although PM Modi never had the opportunity to meet Karpoori Ji personally, he draws insights from Kailashpati Mishra Ji, who worked closely with the stalwart leader.
Karpoori Thakur Ji, born into the Nai Samaj, faced numerous obstacles but rose to prominence through dedication and commitment to societal betterment. His life exemplified simplicity and a commitment to social justice. Despite achieving significant milestones, he maintained a humble lifestyle that resonated deeply with the common people.
The late leader's simplicity is underscored by anecdotes such as his decision to use personal funds for his daughter's wedding and his refusal to accept land or money for a political leaders' colony during his tenure as Bihar's Chief Minister. Even in death, the stark simplicity of his home moved leaders to tears, questioning how someone of such stature could live in such modest surroundings.
PM Modi shares anecdotes that reveal Karpoori Ji's unwavering commitment to his principles. In one instance, during a gathering in Patna, he walked in with a torn Kurta. Despite jests and attempts to raise funds for a new Kurta, Karpoori Ji chose to donate the money to the CM Relief Fund, staying true to his ideals.
Karpoori Thakur Ji's political journey was characterized by monumental efforts to address systemic inequalities and create a society where resources were distributed fairly. His commitment to social justice led him to take an anti-Congress stance, believing that the party had deviated from its founding principles.
Education was a cause close to Karpoori Ji's heart, and throughout his political career, he worked to improve facilities for the underprivileged. A proponent of education in local languages, he aimed to provide equal opportunities for success to people from small towns and villages. Additionally, he implemented measures for the welfare of senior citizens.

A staunch believer in democracy, debate, and discussion, Karpoori Ji actively participated in movements like Quit India and vehemently resisted the Emergency. His unique perspectives earned admiration from leaders like JP, Dr Lohia, and Charan Singh Ji.
One of his most significant contributions was strengthening affirmative action for backward classes, challenging opposition to ensure fair representation and opportunities. Under his leadership, policies were implemented to lay the groundwork for a more inclusive society.
PM Modi emphasizes that the government, inspired by Karpoori Ji's vision, has implemented transformative empowerment schemes, reflecting a commitment to social welfare. The efforts towards poverty alleviation, reservation policies, and the establishment of the OBC Commission align with Karpoori Ji's ideals.
As a leader from the backward classes, PM Modi expresses gratitude to Jan Nayak Karpoori Thakur Ji, underscoring the loss the nation experienced at his relatively young age of 64. Despite the untimely departure, Karpoori Ji's legacy lives on, and he remains a true "Jan Nayak" in the hearts and minds of millions.
