PM Modi lands in Sri Lanka, receives ceremonial welcome; key agreements likely on defence, energy and trade
PTC News Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi received ceremonial welcome as he kicked off his three-day Sri Lanka visit. This marks PM Modi's first trip to the Island nation in his third term. The visit is aimed at deepening regional ties and development cooperation.
Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake greeted him at the venue, marking the start of a packed diplomatic schedule.
PM Modi's arrival in Colombo came after his visit to Thailand, where he held a bilateral meeting with Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and attended the BIMSTEC Summit. On the sidelines, he engaged in further bilateral discussions, laying the groundwork for this leg of his regional outreach.
He is likely to sign key agreements like the joint venture between India’s National Thermal Power Corporation and Sri Lanka’s Ceylon Electricity Board for a 120-megawatt solar power plant in Trincomalee that will address the island nation's growing energy needs.
PM Modi's visit comes at a time when Tamil Nadu passed a resolution to retreive Katchatheevu from Sri Lanka.
