Passenger from Kuala Lumpur arrested at Trichy Airport with 2,447 live turtles in luggage
PTC Web Desk: The authorities at Trichy Airport have successfully intercepted a massive smuggling operation, seizing 2,447 live turtles from a passenger arriving from Kuala Lumpur. The turtles, which were hidden in the checked-in luggage, were discovered by the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) during routine checks.
Trichy Customs officials confirmed the seizure, stating that the passenger’s attempt to illegally bring the endangered species into India was thwarted based on intelligence inputs. The turtles, which were likely being smuggled for illegal sale or trade, are under the threat of extinction due to illegal trafficking.

This recent bust follows a similar operation in October, where Chennai Customs officers, with the help of the AIU, intercepted another smuggling attempt involving a staggering 4,967 red-eared slider turtles and 19 albino red-eared slider turtles, all smuggled from Kuala Lumpur. The persons involved in both incidents were arrested and charged under the Customs Act, 1962.
The turtles seized at Trichy and Chennai are listed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), and their illegal trade is a growing concern for wildlife protection authorities. The Customs Department has vowed to intensify its efforts to combat the illegal wildlife trade, especially targeting endangered species that are being smuggled into India for commercial purposes.
With the smuggling of live animals becoming a rampant global issue, the authorities urge the public to be more aware of wildlife protection laws and report any suspicious activities.
