Parliament winter session: 'One Nation One Election' bill to be tabled in Lok Sabha today
One of the most contentious 'One Nation One Election' bill is expected to be tabled in Lok Sabha on December 17. A ccording to the government statememt, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will introduce the bill in the Lok Sabha.
Along with the ONOE bill, the government will also introduce The Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill. In view of the tabling of the bill, the BJP has issued a three-line whip to all MPs in Lok Sabha.
After the introduction of the bill, Union Minister is likely to urge Lok Sabha speaker to further send the bill to Joint Committee of Parliament for wider consultations. The committee will be chaird by BJP with maximum members in position.
The committee's composition will be anounced on Tuesday by Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla.
Several Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee and MK Stalin have opposed the idea of simultaneous polls in the country, calling the bill "anti-democratic" and an authoritarian move designed to "undermine India's democracy".
