Panjab University mourns student Aditya Thakur’s tragic demise, cancels cultural events

PTC Web Desk: Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, has mourned the untimely demise of Aditya Thakur, a student of the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), who succumbed to his injuries at the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, received in a brawl between two groups.

Expressing deep sorrow, PU Vice Chancellor Prof Renu Vig called Aditya a “bright and promising student,” stating, “This is an immense loss to the Panjab University community. Our thoughts and prayers are with Aditya’s family and friends during this difficult time.”


PU Dean of Students Welfare, Prof Amit Chauhan, issued a notice of condolence, announcing the cancellation of all cultural functions, events, and activities at the university until further notice as a mark of respect. However, academic programmes will continue as scheduled.

A PU spokesperson confirmed that the administration is in close contact with Aditya’s family and the police. “We are ensuring all necessary support to the family and remain hopeful that the culprits will be arrested soon and brought to justice,” the spokesperson said.

The university is also closely monitoring the condition of three other injured students, who are reportedly recovering well.
