Pahalgam attack massive intel failure ? Opposition slams government, seeks thorough analysis over security lapses

PTC News Desk: The barbaric act of violence that was orchestrated in Jammu and Kashir's Pahalgam claimed 26 lives. The incident has not only triggered nationwide outrage but has also prompted a series of actions by Indian government against Pakistan while slapping a possible diplomatic shutdown.

Earlier, in a Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, India announced a series of diplomatic actions against Pakistan in response to the horrific Pahalgam massacre including suspension of Indus Water Treaty and closure of Attari-Wagah border. The Indian government also banned Pakistani nationals from entering India.

At a press briefing on Wednesday evening, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced the measures. One of the key measure is scaling down of diplomatic missions in each country. Both the Indian and Pakistani high commissions will reduce their personnel strength from 55 to 30, to be completed by May 1.

Opposition flags massive intelligence failure

Meanwhile, the opposition has slammed the government over the incident and flagged massive intel failure leading to security lapses. Hours before the all party meeting convened by the Union government at 6 pm in Parliament building on Thursday, Congress Working Committee held a meeting and said that is is imperative to carry out a comprehensive analysis into the intelligence failures and security lapses that enabled such an attack in a Union Territory — an area directly under the purview of the Union Home Ministry.

AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi has sought accountability for the unfortunate incident and said that 'if the terrorists could reach Pahalgam, they could reach Srinagar too.

“They came from Pakistan, and Pakistan supports them. How did they cross the border? Who is responsible for it? They could also reach Srinagar if they reached Pahalgam... Justice would only prevail when accountability is fixed... We condemn the terror attack,” Owaisi said.

“A place where there were so many tourists, there was not even one police personnel, or a CRPF camp. The Quick Reaction Team (QRT) took over an hour to reach the spot. And these people shot people after asking about their faith,” he added.

According to the experts, the attack was a well-planned assault on the civilians as terrorists had done the reccee of the area and knew that the Pahalgam, Baisaran trail is at least an hour’s trek, and it would take some time for the help to arrive after the terror attack. They would have kept all of that in mind before killing the innocent tourists.

The attack targetting civilians especially at a place also called the 'Mini Switzerland' have raised serious questions over the real time security and monitoring which also indicates easy facilitation of the terrorists into the valley.
