One Nation, One Election to be implemented in current tenure of Modi government: Sources
PTC News Desk: The BJP-led NDA government will adopt 'one nation, one election' during its current tenure, according to sources. As the third term of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's NDA government enters its 100th day in office, sources say the ruling alliance's cohesion will last the rest of the term.
"Definitely, it will be implemented within this term. It will become a reality," claimed one source, speaking on the condition of anonymity.
The prime minister made a strong case for 'one nation, one election' in his Independence Day speech last month, claiming that frequent polls were impeding the country's progress.
"The nation has to come forward for 'one nation, one election'," Modi said in his address from the Red Fort's ramparts.
'One nation, one election' is one of the BJP's core promises in its Lok Sabha election manifesto.
In March of this year, a high-level team led by former President Ram Nath Kovind advocated simultaneous Lok Sabha and state assembly elections as the first stage, followed by synchronised local body polls within 100 days.
Separately, the Law Commission is expected to recommend holding simultaneous elections for all three levels of government (Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies such as municipalities and panchayats) beginning in 2029, as well as a provision for unity government in cases of hung houses or no-confidence motions.
The Kovind panel hasn't established a period for implementing simultaneous polls.
