NMC starts registration of MBBS doctors for unique IDs on new portal

PTC Web Desk: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has initiated the registration process for all MBBS doctors eligible to practice in India through its newly launched portal. As part of this initiative, all medical practitioners will receive a unique ID, integrated into the National Medical Register (NMR)—a dynamic, central database of all registered doctors, verified using Aadhaar IDs.

Dr B Srinivas, secretary of the NMC, announced that the NMR is now ready for immediate registration of registered medical practitioners (RMPs). According to a recent public notice, all doctors listed in the Indian Medical Register (IMR) must re-register on the NMR. The portal interlinks medical colleges, institutions, and state medical councils (SMCs) to streamline the process.

Certain data will be made publicly available, while other details will only be accessible to the Ethics & Medical Registration Board (EMRB) of the NMC, SMCs, National Board of Examinations (NBE), medical institutions, and RMPs, as per their requirements.

How to register?

To register, doctors need their Aadhaar IDs, a digital copy of their MBBS degree, and the registration certificate from the State Medical Council or Medical Council of India where they first registered. Additional details, such as qualifications and registration credentials, can be manually entered and submitted via the portal.

Once the registration is submitted, it will be automatically forwarded to the respective SMC for verification, followed by a review from the relevant college or institute. Upon successful verification, the application will be sent to the NMC, which will issue a unique NMR ID.

During this process, doctors can also opt to join the Healthcare Provider Registry, linking them to the broader digital healthcare ecosystem.

The NMR portal provides multiple features, including the ability to add additional qualifications, track applications, suspend licenses, and issue NMR ID cards and digital doctor certificates. Currently, registration is only available for MBBS degrees, but the option to add additional qualifications will be added soon.

Notably, the National Medical Register (NMR) Portal was inaugurated by Union Health Minister JP Nadda on August 23. "The National Health Register is a much-needed step that will enhance the digital healthcare ecosystem and ensure quality healthcare for India’s citizens," Nadda had stated.

The NMC, as mandated under Section 31 of the NMC Act, 2019, requires the Ethics & Medical Registration Board (EMRB) to maintain a national register in electronic form, containing the name, address, and recognized qualifications of all licensed medical practitioners.
