PTC Web Desk: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari  on Monday announced a proposal to introduce a new law that would require vehicle horns in India to produce sounds based on traditional Indian musical instruments.

While speaking at a public event, Nitin Gadkari said the current noise pollution caused by vehicle horns could be reduced by replacing harsh honking sounds with more pleasant tones such as those from instruments like the flute, tabla, harmonium, and violin. He stated that this initiative is aimed at improving the country's soundscape and enhancing public well-being.

Addressing broader concerns about environmental pollution, the minister said the transport sector contributed to 40% of India’s air pollution. In response, he highlighted the Modi government's commitment to promoting sustainable fuel alternatives, including methanol, ethanol, and other green biofuels, to power the next generation of vehicles.

Gadkari also praised the remarkable growth of India’s automobile industry, which has seen rapid expansion over the past decade. From being valued at Rs 14 lakh crore in 2014, the industry has now grown to Rs 22 lakh crore. This progress, he noted, is supported by strong performance in exports of two-wheelers and passenger vehicles.

In a significant achievement, he revealed that India has surpassed Japan to become the third-largest automobile market in the world, following only the United States and China.
