‘My heart was hurt,’ MP Amritpal Singh responds to mother statement about ‘not a Khalistani supporter’

Amritpal Singh responds to mother statement : In a recent development, newly-elected Member of Parliament from Punjab’s Khadoor Sahib, Amritpal Singh rejected his mother's statement regarding the ‘Khalistani’ supporter.

"He (Amritpal) is not a Khalistani supporter. Does speaking about Punjab, saving the youth of Punjab make him a Khalistani supporter?", Balwinder Kaur, Singh's mother said.

"He contested the election within the ambit of the Constitution and now he should not be called (a Khalistani supporter).

Currently detained under the stringent National Security Act and imprisoned in the high-security Dibrugarh jail in Assam, Amritpal Singh expressed deep hurt over his mother's remarks.

In his heartfelt letter, Amritpal Singh said, “The statement made by my mother deeply saddened me. Such statements should not come from family or anyone who supports me.”

Singh emphasised that dreaming of a Khalsa state is not a sin but rather a matter of pride.  “I will always choose my community.  This statement aligns well with the historical incident where, as Sikhs were being martyred alongside Banda Singh Bahadur, a 14-year-old young man’s mother tried to save him by saying that he was not a Sikh. The young man then declared that if this woman claims I am not a disciple of the Guru, then I declare that she is not my mother. Indeed, this example is very harsh for this incident (of Amritpal’s mother statement), but from a principle standpoint, it is understandable,” Amritpal added.

“I warn my family for even thinking about compromising on Sikh Raj, let alone speaking about it. Moving forward, there should be no such negligence when addressing the Sangat,” he said.

Amritpal Singh oath ceremony

Amritpal Singh who had been under the stringent National Security Act and imprisoned in the high-security Dibrugarh jail in Assam defeated Congress leader Kulbir Singh Zira by a margin of over 1.97 lakh votes from Punjab's Khadoor Sahib constituency and took oath as Lok Sabha member on July 5, subject to some conditions in their parole orders.

His victory marks a crucial milestone in his political career despite his detention under the NSA.

‘Waris Punjab De’ head Amritpal Singh was arrested from Moga’s Rode village on April 23, 2023, after a more than one-month-long manhunt. Following his arrest, NSA was invoked against him and he was sent to Dibrugarh jail in Assam.

Amritpal Singh and his associates have been charged in multiple criminal cases, including spreading communal disharmony, attempted murder, assaults on police personnel, and obstructing public servants in the lawful discharge of their duties
