Muslim body chief clarifies Eid-ul-Fitr date in India; April 10 or 11?

Eid-ul-Fitr 2024: As the anticipation builds for Eid-ul-Fitr, the celebration marking the end of Ramadan, clarity on the date of observance becomes paramount. Maulana Khalid Rashid Firangi Mahali, the head of the Islamic Centre of India, has stepped forward to provide guidance, ensuring that the occasion is observed with unity and accordance with Islamic tradition.

In a recent statement, Maulana Khalid Rashid Firangi Mahali emphasised that the determination of Eid-ul-Fitr's timing hinges upon the sighting of the crescent Moon, a longstanding practice in the Muslim lunar calendar. He articulated that if the Moon is sighted on Tuesday, April 9, then Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 10. Conversely, if the Moon remains unseen, the celebration will be deferred to the following day, April 11.

The call to action from Maulana Khalid Rashid Firangi Mahali extends beyond mere date clarification. He urges the Namazis, those who perform the prayers, to gather at Eidgah for the special prayers associated with Eid-ul-Fitr. Additionally, he implores the community to embrace the spirit of generosity and compassion by extending assistance to the less fortunate during this auspicious time.

In a poignant plea, Maulana Khalid Rashid Firangi Mahali discourages the practice of offering prayers on the roads, emphasising the sanctity of the occasion and the importance of congregating at designated places for prayers. He reassures the faithful that their heartfelt prayers and wishes will be fulfilled, while also stressing the significance of praying for the progress and prosperity of the nation.

The global context of Eid-ul-Fitr's observance is also highlighted, particularly in the Middle Eastern countries where the sighting of the Shawwal crescent Moon is pivotal in determining the end of Ramadan. Reports from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar indicate that the Moon sighting did not occur on April 8. Consequently, Saudi Arabia, the custodian of Islamic holy sites, has declared Wednesday, April 10, as the commencement of Eid-ul-Fitr holidays.

Echoing this decision, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar have also announced April 10 as the day for Eid celebrations. This adjustment signifies the completion of a 30-day fast, deviating from the usual 29-day duration. Ramadan, a sacred period revered by Muslims worldwide, encompasses fasting, prayer, and spiritual reflection. It is a time when mosques reverberate with the devout prayers of the faithful, especially during the nightly Taraweeh prayers.

As the anticipation for Eid-ul-Fitr builds, Maulana Khalid Rashid Firangi Mahali's clarifications provide not only logistical guidance but also reinforce the spiritual significance of the occasion, emphasising unity, compassion, and devotion in the observance of this cherished Islamic festival.
