Mumbai Rain: Police issue advisory after IMD declares red alert for heavy rains; concerns rise over school kids safety
PTC News Desk: Mumbai Police, citing the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) forecast of a "red alert" until 8.30am on Friday, issued an advice on Thursday urging people to remain indoors until absolutely necessary. However, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation announced that on Friday, all of the local colleges and schools will run as usual.
According to reports, the IMD issued a red signal for the morning of July 26th, anticipating exceptionally heavy rains and thunderstorms all day long. The warning was sent out as the city prepared for yet another day of heavy rain-related traffic jams, flooding, and delays in public transportation.
"A Red alert has been issued by the IMD for Mumbai until 8.30 a.m. tomorrow. Please stay inside unless absolutely necessary, all Mumbai residents. On X, the Mumbai Police stated, "Please keep safe.
Residents were advised to call 100 in the event of an emergency.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) stated late Thursday evening that the weather and rainfall in Mumbai are normal and that educational institutions will operate normally on Friday, despite the Mumbai Police having issued a warning for heavy rain throughout the entire city on Friday.
Mumbai's current weather and precipitation are typical, making daily living in the big city easy. Consequently, tomorrow, Friday, July 26, 2024, all schools and colleges within the boundaries of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will continue to operate normally. The BMC announced this on X.
"We respectfully ask parents to rely solely on official information from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and not to believe any other information or rumors regarding school and college holidays. For further information, the local council advised residents to maintain contact with the administration of the relevant schools and colleges.
Due to Thursday's rain, around a dozen flights were canceled and ten were rerouted to neighboring locations in suburban Mumbai. Local rail services were delayed yesterday due to waterlogging on train tracks and stations, according to the local authorities.
Up to 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, the city of Mumbai received 44 mm of rain, the eastern suburbs 90 mm, and the western suburbs 89 mm. While streets remained submerged, rainwater poured into homes and severely congested highways.
