Mumbai police get threat call about plot to kill PM Narendra Modi | Read protocol for PM's visits
PTC Web Desk: Mumbai Police's traffic control room received a threatening call on Thursday, claiming a plot to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Police sources revealed that the caller is a woman. A case has been registered at the Amboli police station, and the police are actively working to apprehend her.
Initial investigations suggest the caller might be mentally disturbed. However, the police are following standard protocols and conducting a thorough investigation into the matter.
This incident echoes a similar threat received by the Mumbai Police in July last year. At the time, an unidentified person called the police control room, warning of plans to assassinate Prime Minister Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The caller had also threatened a "26/11-like attack" in the country.
In a separate incident earlier this month, Shiv Sena's Haryana in-charge Vikram Singh filed an online complaint with cyber police, reporting a threatening call from a person claiming to represent the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. According to Singh, the caller identified as Rohit Godara and demanded a share in his business.
Singh alleged the call came via WhatsApp from a UK-based number on November 11 at around 3 pm. The matter is under investigation, the police confirmed.
PM’s security responsibility lies with SPG
The responsibility of ensuring the Prime Minister's security lies with the Special Protection Group (SPG). The SPG forms the first security layer around the Prime Minister. SPG personnel undergo rigorous training based on guidelines provided by the United States Secret Service. They are equipped with modern weapons, including the MNF-2000 assault rifle, automatic guns, and 17M revolvers.
Protocol for PM's visits
When the Prime Minister visits a state, four agencies manage the security arrangements: SPG, ASL (Advance Security Liaison), state police, and the local administration. The ASL team remains updated on every detail related to the visit and works in coordination with central security agencies to oversee the arrangements. Local police are responsible for securing the route and venue during the PM’s visit, but SPG officials monitor and supervise their decisions. The ASL team conducts thorough checks of the event venue and travel routes.
Additionally, the SPG ensures the screening of people approaching the Prime Minister and manages the immediate security around him. The local administration collaborates with the police to implement these arrangements effectively.
Protocol for aerial travel
When the Prime Minister travels to an event by a helicopter, a backup road route is always prepared for emergency situations. Senior police officials inspect the security of this alternative route before the visit. During rehearsals, SPG officials, local police, intelligence bureau personnel, and ASL team members work together to ensure the route's safety.
A jammer-equipped vehicle accompanies the convoy, capable of jamming any radio-controlled or remote-controlled devices within a 100-metre radius on either side of the road. This measure prevents the detonation of remote-controlled bombs or IEDs.
