Modi government's message to Germany, stay clear of Kejriwal's arrest proceedings
PTC News Desk: Amidst the Narendra Modi government's stern response to the United States' diplomatic remarks on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in a liquor scam, Germany has notably shifted its stance, opting to steer clear of India's internal affairs.
Following the Ministry of External Affairs' summoning of a senior German diplomat to South Block last Saturday, wherein a demarche was issued to Bonn protesting against the German spokesperson's comments on India's internal matters, Germany has evidently chosen to backtrack. The critical remarks made by the German spokesperson were perceived by the MEA as undue interference in India's judicial processes and a challenge to the independence of its judiciary.
However, India's resolute stance appears to have yielded results, as the German spokesperson yesterday declined to divulge any information regarding the summoning in Delhi and refrained from commenting on the case.
In a statement, the spokesperson asserted, "We have already commented on the case. We will not disclose details of confidential discussions at this time. Both parties have a keen interest in enhancing cooperation, and we, along with the Indian side, anticipate the forthcoming government consultations scheduled for autumn this year. The Indian Constitution upholds fundamental human rights and freedoms, values which we share with India as a strategic partner." The spokesperson's response was delivered in German, with the above translation provided.
