Mobile internet services to resume in Manipur nearly after five months: CM Biren Singh

Internet services in Manipur: In a major development, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh stated on Saturday morning that mobile internet services in the state would be restored from Saturday i.e. September 23, nearly five months after they were suspended following an upsurge of unrest in the state.

Manipur's internet services, including mobile and broadband, were cut off on May 3, the day the state began to be engulfed with violence. The internet restriction, which was initially imposed for five days, was repeatedly extended for five days at a stretch, due to the state's law-and-order situation.

While mobile internet services, which are how most people access the internet, have been continually blocked for the last four and a half months, broadband connections were conditionally restored on July 25 following a government decision.

While making provisions for the restoration of broadband services, the order stated that the suspension of mobile internet services would remain in place, citing that “there are still apprehensions that the spread of disinformation and false rumours through various social media platforms… and sending bulk SMS, for facilitating and or/mobilization of mobs of agitators and demonstrations, which can cause loss of life and/or damage to public/private property…”.
