Mob sets Gurugram mosque on fire, one dead in late night attack
Gurugram mosque set on fire: A mob of around 45 people fired at a mosque in Gurugram’s sector 57 late Monday night, setting it on fire, the police said. At least one person has died and three are injured in the incident, with one of these said to be critical.
The incident reportedly took place between midnight and 1 a.m., when a mob carrying lathis charged at a local mosque in Sector 57. The mob started pelting stones and firing many shots at the mosque, with some members of the group entering the building to attack people inside. The mosque was set on fire within minutes of the firing.
"A mob of about 45 people attacked the mosque late Monday night and set it on fire. At least one person has been confirmed shot dead while three others have been injured and are being treated in hospitals. One of them is said to be critical," said Nitish Agarwal, DCP East.
On Monday afternoon, clashes erupted in Haryana's Nuh district when a religious procession going through the district was attacked. At least two home guards were killed in the incident, and many were injured, including police officers. By Monday evening, the violence had expanded to other parts of Haryana, with violence being reported from Sohna in the Gurugram district.
Dozens more suffered injuries in the ongoing conflict, including around 20 policemen.
The Haryana government issued prohibitory orders in Nuh and Gurugram on Monday under Section 144 of the CrpC, with the Centre dispatching 20 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) to handle the situation in the state.
The Haryana government also issued an order late Monday night, declaring the closure of schools in Gurugram, Faridabad, and Palwal on Tuesday.
