If reports are to be believed, the arrest has been made on the at the request if Indian investigative agencies including the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED), follows non-bailable warrants issued against him by Mumbai courts.
Choksi, who had been a fugitive since 2018, was detained on April 12 from a hospital in Belgium, where he had reportedly been undergoing treatment. His arreste came days after Indian agencies accelarated the extradition efforts.
According tot he sources, he was planning to shift to the Switzerland from Belgium for his treatment when he was arrested.
The action was taken following extradition requests submitted by the ED and CBI in September 2024. Choksi's legal team contended that he was battling blood cancer and unfit to travel. However, Indian authorities challenged this in court, pointing out that since Choksi had managed to fly from Antigua to Belgium for treatment, he was equally capable of returning to India, where sufficient medical facilities were available.
