Maximum temperatures from April to June likely to surpass normal levels: IMD

PTC Web Desk:  The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of an extended period of heat waves across central, northern plains, and southern India this summer. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, the Director-General of IMD, conveyed this forecast during a virtual press conference on Monday, indicating that maximum temperatures from April to June are expected to surpass normal levels.

The IMD predicts two to eight days of heat wave conditions in several regions of central India, the northern plains, and southern India. States such as Gujarat, Maharashtra, north Karnataka, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and west Madhya Pradesh are particularly identified as prone to these conditions. Additionally, the IMD revealed that 23 states have devised action plans to manage any heat-related emergencies.

Central India and the western peninsular region are expected to experience above-normal temperatures during the specified period. The IMD underscored that the most vulnerable to the heat waves are the economically disadvantaged segments of society.

The heightened temperatures during heat waves pose significant risks, especially for at-risk populations such as the elderly, children, and individuals with underlying health issues. To mitigate these risks, the IMD urged authorities to take proactive measures, as prolonged heat spells can strain critical infrastructure like power grids and transportation systems.

In response to these challenges, the IMD has stressed the importance of authorities implementing proactive measures. This includes setting up cooling centers, issuing heat advisories, and adopting strategies to counteract urban heat island effects in affected areas.
