Massive cyberattack hit Japan airlines; flights impacted, ticket sale suspended
PTC News Desk: Japan airlines subjected to a cyberattack on Thursday morning while disrupting both internal and external system causing delays to more than 20 domestic flights.
“Today, from 7:24am, we have been under cyber attack on our internal and external network devices, causing problems with the systems that communicate with external systems. We expect this to affect both domestic and international flights.” JAL said in a post on X.
While the airline acknowledged the breach, a spokesperson from the airlines told AFP that there were no immediate updates regarding potential delays or cancellations.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi stated at a regular news conference on Thursday that the transport ministry had instructed Japan Airlines (JAL) to expedite efforts to restore its system and accommodate affected passengers.
Television footage showed numerous passengers stranded at Tokyo's Haneda airport due to the disruption, which occurred during the busy year-end holiday travel period.
Other Japanese airlines, including ANA Holdings, Skymark, and Starflyer, were not impacted by the issue.
Japan's peak travel season is just beginning, as offices close this weekend for the New Year holidays, the country's largest annual celebration, when millions travel from cities back to their hometowns.
