Manipur violence: Protesters hold torch rally near Governor's residence in Manipur

Manipur violence: Protests erupted in Manipur’s capital, Imphal, on Sunday evening as a large group of demonstrators organised a torch rally to voice their frustration over the escalating violence that has engulfed the state in recent weeks. The protesters, concerned about the deteriorating security situation, aimed to draw attention to the urgent need for intervention to restore peace.

The rally, which took place near the Governor's House, saw participants carrying torches and chanting slogans, demanding immediate action to address the unrest. The demonstration followed a recent surge in violence across multiple districts in Manipur, where several attacks and killings have been reported. This ongoing conflict, primarily between the Meitei and Kuki communities, has claimed over 200 lives, raising fears of further instability.

Security forces swiftly intervened, dispersing the protesters and restoring order. Although there were no immediate reports of injuries or arrests, authorities remain on high alert as tensions in the region continue to simmer.

In the political sphere, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh met with the Governor, pressing for the return of full control over law and order to his administration. The central government had recently shifted responsibility for the state's security to the Union Home Ministry’s appointed security advisor, a move that has sparked controversy.

The Manipur Police have also ramped up security efforts in response to the recent violence. They have deployed anti-drone systems to combat the rising use of drones and rockets in the conflict. Authorities are in the process of acquiring additional anti-drone technology, including anti-drone guns, to address the new threats posed by these aerial attacks.

The conflict in Manipur has taken on new dimensions with the use of advanced weaponry, further complicating efforts to quell the violence. Despite ongoing security measures, the situation remains tense, and local residents continue to express concern over the worsening conditions.
