Manipur Violence: Mob torches security forces' buses in Kangpokpi district
Manipur Violence: A mob in Manipur's Kangpokpi district set two buses used by security forces on fire. The incident occurred at Sapormeina when the buses were returning from Dimapur on Tuesday evening. No casualties were reported.
The mob, representing one of the warring communities, stopped the buses bearing Manipur registration numbers and insisted on checking if any member of the opposing community was on board. Subsequently, some individuals from the group set the buses ablaze.
The northeastern state has been grappling with ethnic violence for nearly three months, resulting in the deaths of over 160 people and leaving hundreds injured. The violence initially erupted on May 3 following a 'Tribal Solidarity March,' organized in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
Notably, the Meiteis constitute around 53 per cent of Manipur's population and predominantly reside in the Imphal Valley. On the other hand, the tribal communities, including Nagas and Kukis, make up about 40 per cent and mostly inhabit the hill districts.
